What Are Laser Facials?

Laser facials, also referred to as laser skin rejuvenation or laser skin resurfacing, rely on cutting-edge laser technology to revitalize the complexion and improve the skin’s overall texture and tone. Whether you are struggling with wrinkles, lines, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, enlarged pores, or another aesthetic concern, a laser facial will utilize targeted light energy to eradicate blemishes and jumpstart collagen production. With regular laser facials in the Bay Area, you can achieve the youthful, attractive appearance you have always envisioned for yourself.

What Are the Different Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing?

There are several different types of lasers that can be employed to refine the complexion. Our team here at the Tri Valley Plastic Surgery Med Spa will select the best option for your unique needs and goals after examining your skin during a private consultation.

Ablative Vs. Non-Ablative Lasers

Laser skin resurfacing is performed using two main types of lasers – ablative and non-ablative. Ablative devices target the outermost damaged layer of skin (the epidermis), removing impurities and imperfections. The laser heat also firms the skin by triggering enhanced collagen production.

Collagen is an all-important skin protein responsible for suppleness, resilience, and a youthful glow. As the complexion heals after an ablative procedure, it will appear tighter and clearer.

Ablative lasers come as CO2 (carbon dioxide) or Er:YAG (Erbium:YAG) devices. The Er:YAG laser results in fewer side effects and less downtime, as the skin absorbs more of its energy during treatment. Sometimes both ablative laser types are used in combination for best results. Another option is a ‘fractional’ ablative laser, which targets only a portion of the skin at a time, protecting the surrounding skin cells from damage.

Non-ablative laser resurfacing spares the top skin layer but encourages collagen renewal nonetheless by gently warming the dermis. While results are not as dramatic, there is usually less superficial damage or side effects with non-ablative laser therapy.

Who Is a Candidate for Laser Facials?

Laser facials in Oakland are appropriate for a wide range of patients who wish to improve their appearance and maintain an attractive, inviting complexion. Patients with the following characteristics can strongly benefit:

Aging skin

Patients who seek to combat lines, wrinkles, folds, and creases, as well as laxity, can find an excellent solution in a laser facial.

Concerns with pigmentation

A laser facial is a good option for those unhappy with age spots, sunspots, or hyperpigmentation, as the treatment encourages a more even skin tone.

Acne scarring

Patients with acne scars can experience improved skin texture and a more consistent skin tone after a laser facial.

Dull skin

Patients who seek a more energized, radiant complexion make great candidates for a personalized laser facial in the Bay Area.

To best determine your candidacy and which type of laser therapy is best for meeting your goals, our team in Dublin will conduct a thorough consultation process, examining your skin and going over your medical history to ensure the procedure will be safe, effective, and successful for you.

The Laser Facial Procedure

Prior to your laser facial, your skin will be numbed with a topical anesthetic, which helps to prevent any discomfort or pain during treatment. In cases of more in-depth sessions, general anesthesia or sedation are also options. During your laser facial, your eyes will be shielded with goggles or wet gauze. Once you are relaxed and ready, the laser device will be passed over the treatment areas. The depth and intensity of the laser will be carefully controlled by your provider.

After a Laser Facial

After an Oakland laser facial, it can take several hours for the local anesthetic to wear off and the feeling to return to your face. You can take prescription and over-the-counter pain medications to help offset any initial soreness or tenderness. Your provider may cover your treatment areas with a dressing or healing ointment to protect your pores as you heal. Our team will provide a detailed aftercare plan to follow, taking the guesswork out of recovery.

For the first few days, you will be dealing with some swelling and redness in the face, symptoms that will gradually fade in the coming days and weeks. At night, aim to sleep with your head elevated. You can also use ice packs covered in a towel. When you wash your face, use a gentle cleanser and moisturize several times a day. Our team can recommend the best medical-grade products for you to use. You may also need to take a round of antibiotics to ensure no infections arise during your recovery process. Lastly, avoid contact with harmful UV rays until your skin has completely healed.

How Long Do Laser Facials Take?

The duration of your session will depend on the specific laser technology chosen, the areas targeted, and the extent of your aesthetic concerns. One appointment can extend from 15 to 60 minutes, and multiple sessions may be recommended to achieve your goals.

Are Laser Facials Painful?

Thanks to local anesthesia or sedation/general anesthesia, most patients find their treatment experience to be painless and manageable. The sensation during your session can feel like the light snap of a rubber band against the skin. Some lasers even have built-in cooling systems to offset discomfort. After your appointment, you can manage any soreness or tenderness with pain medications and an ice pack.

What Are the Potential Complications With a Laser Facial?

While our team strives to ensure a safe, seamless treatment process, there are some risks to be aware of with laser facials. These include the following:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Infection
  • Changes in skin color
  • Scarring
  • The reactivation of cold sores

What Are the Alternatives to a Laser Facial?

There are many options for rejuvenating the complexion, and our team can discuss your choices in more detail during your private consultation. Patients can choose from a Hydrafacial, Clear + Brilliant, or Microneedling (SkinPen), all of which can clarify the pores and enhance youthfulness and vitality.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Our team typically recommends around 4-10 sessions to comprehensively improve blemishes, imperfections, rough skin, and other aesthetic concerns. Afterward, you can come into the office for a maintenance facial every 1-3 months.

How Will My Skin Look After Treatment?

Immediately after your treatment, you may notice a feeling like a mild sunburn for up to 15 minutes. A flushed, warm glow may last several hours. The treatment may also bring pore congestion to the surface, causing a breakout in the first week or so. These symptoms are all temporary, however, so there is no need for alarm. It just means that you might wish to schedule your appointment outside of any important events so your skin has enough time to heal.

Can I Get a Laser Facial if I Am Pregnant Or Nursing?

Unfortunately, there is not currently enough research surrounding the effects of laser procedures on pregnant women, so it’s best to avoid a laser facial if you are planning to have children or are currently breastfeeding.
