New Technique. Natural Results.

Silicone? Saline? Instead of breast implants, have you thought about using your own fat as a way to enhance your breast size? At Tri-Valley Plastic Surgery, we offer a new multistep technique called fat transfer breast augmentation in Oakland, San Jose, and the Bay Area.

In this procedure, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Williams removes fat from parts of your body that you would like to be slimmer. They then use your natural fat to enhance your breasts, as opposed to synthetic implants. This is a great option for those looking for a modest increase in breast size and natural-looking results.

What is Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?

Fat transfer breast augmentation, also known as natural breast augmentation, has become increasingly popular because the procedure is less invasive, more natural, and has fewer potential risks and side effects than breast implants.

During a fat transfer breast augmentation, Dr. Williams removes unwanted fat from one part of your body using liposuction. They will purify these cells before injecting them into your breasts using a small tube or syringe to maximize the chance that the body accepts the new donor cells.

The results are not as dramatic as with breast implants, but many women choose this option because they want a natural look and feel. Fat transfer breast augmentation is less invasive than breast implant surgery and reduces the risk of complications. You’re also able to get rid of unwanted fat in other areas of your body.

How Do I Know if Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation is Right for Me?

Fat transfer breast augmentation is a great way to increase your breast size by one cup while removing noticeable amounts of stubborn fat from other areas of your body. If you’ve been looking at increasing your breast size or sculpting your body but have held off due to concerns over implants or long downtimes, this may be the procedure for you.

As with any surgical procedure, you should be in good overall health and don’t smoke. Since the technique requires at least 1,000 milliliters of pure fat, you have to have enough available to qualify. Dr. Williams will evaluate whether or not you qualify for fat transfer during your consultation.

If you’re seeking dramatic results, breast implants may be a better option. Fat transfer breast augmentation is a great way to restore breast volume for women whose breasts have changed as a result of weight loss or pregnancy. This procedure does not lift breasts or improve stretched skin. In that case, you might need to combine fat transfer with a breast lift. Fat transfer breast augmentation can also be combined with an areola reduction.

During your consultation for a fat transfer breast augmentation Oakland plastic surgeon, Dr. Williams will review all these options with you. They believe the best surgeries begin with a thorough discussion of your expectations. Once we know what you want, we can help you find the procedures that will help you attain your goals.

How Does the Procedure Work?

At Tri Valley Plastic Surgery serving Oakland fat transfer breast augmentation is a three-step process. These steps are all done during a single procedure at our state-of-the-art facilities. Expect the entire procedure to take a few hours to complete.

Step One: Fat Cell Collection

After discussing which areas to target, Dr. Williams creates tiny incisions and insert a blunt-tipped cannula directly into the fat. This liposuction wand gently sucks out the fat from your trouble spots. Dr. Williams may be able to combine this procedure with other techniques to give you firmer skin and smoother contours following liposuction, so be sure to ask about combination procedures during your consultation.

Step Two: Fat Purification

Our providers Dr. Williams uses a gravity-filtration system to separate fat from other fluids and blood, leaving pure fat to transfer. The fat is then washed in an antibiotic solution before it's transferred to syringes and injected into the breasts. This process minimizes the chance that your body will reject these cells following implantation. On average, most fat transfer patients will ultimately keep more than 80% of the fat transferred to the breasts in the months following a procedure with proper purification techniques.

Step Three: Fat Transfer

Using multiple injections around the breast, our providers create symmetrical results that are beautiful and balanced. He deposits small amounts of fat in the upper and middle areas of the breasts to create a youthful fullness and natural look and feel to the breasts.

What is the Recovery Time?

Since fat transfer breast augmentation is less invasive than breast implant surgery, you can expect to return to work within a few days in most cases. If you have a job that requires strenuous activity, that timetable may take longer. Dr. Williams will advise you on your post-surgery timeline during your consultation.

It’s normal to experience some soreness or mild pain in the breasts and the areas where fat was taken from following your procedure. This should only last for a few days. Usually, over-the-counter pain medication will be enough to deal with the soreness, and the Oakland plastic surgery team at Tri Valley will make sure you’re comfortable.

You can expect bruising from the liposuction to last for a few weeks while bruising on the breasts should be gone within a month. While moderate activity is fine the day after surgery, you should avoid strenuous activity (including exercise) for a few weeks. We recommend you stay away from cardio and sex for three weeks. Weight training and yoga should be put on hold for six weeks following the procedure to give your incisions plenty of time to heal and avoid scarring.

For best results, you’re asked to wear a compression bra for a few days and then a sports bra. To avoid putting pressure on your breasts, you will have to sleep on your back for a few weeks following the procedure.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Results

In most breast augmentation, there is a period of time following surgery where the implants settle into position, and the swelling reduces following the procedure. This is called “dropping and fluffing,” and it usually takes months. However, the “drop and fluff” period is a lot shorter with fat transfer augmentation because there are no implants!

Over time, your body will process the fat in the transfer and eliminate some of the fat naturally. This usually takes about three months, and your breasts will likely reduce slightly during that time before reaching their final shape.

If you maintain a consistent level of diet and exercise, fat transfer breast augmentation results can last for years. Your breasts will grow larger and smaller as your weight fluctuates like they always have.

How much does fat transfer breast augmentation cost?

The price will vary, depending on how much fat you have transferred. Dr. Williams and the team at Tri Valley Plastic Surgery will give you a full quote during your consultation.

How soon will I see the results?

Immediately following the procedure, you will see an increase in size and fullness of the breasts, but because of swelling in the first few weeks, this will not be the final result. In the first week, you will have a post-op visit with Dr. Williams, where they will examine your breasts and make sure they’re healing properly. The results three months post-surgery are considered permanent.

What happens with the fat cells in my breasts?

Around half of the fat cells that have been transferred to your breasts will die during the first three months. After that, your breasts have settled into their permanent shape and size.

How long will the results last?

While you have to change breast implants every 10 to 20 years, fat transfer breast augmentation is considered permanent as long as you maintain weight.

Will I have scars?

Scarring is minimal since the incisions to harvest and inject the fat are tiny injection points.

What’s the advantage of fat transfer breast augmentation over breast implants?

Implants come with a risk of rupture or capsular contracture, where the tissue around the implant hardens and contracts. In addition, your body might reject the implant. With fat transfer, you won’t have to worry about those complications.
