What is Breast Revision Surgery?

Breast revision surgery is the most effective procedure for correcting or improving results from a previous breast augmentation. Complications due to breast augmentation or other alterations can include:

  • Rippling
  • Sagging
  • Asymmetry
  • Malposition
  • Implant rupture
  • Capsular contracture

Breast revision surgery may also be used to adjust implant size, remove implants, or switch to a different type of implant. Patients who have had previous lifts or reductions may experience sagging over time due to aging, hormonal changes, weight gain, or breastfeeding. Breast revision surgery can effectively resolve such issues, as well as improve breast contour and scarring from your previous surgery.

When it comes to breast revision Oakland plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Williams understands it is not an easy path. He knows you did not ask to be here. At Tri Valley Plastic Surgery, you will receive incredible care and compassionate support as you progress through your healing journey.

Great Results. Minimal Downtime.

Benefits of Breast Revision Surgery

Breast revision surgery is used to treat a variety of complications due to breast augmentation, as well as to replace breast implants with another size or type of implant. Issues such as implant displacement, asymmetry, malposition, wrinkling, folding, rupture, and capsular contracture can all be effectively corrected through breast revision surgery. Also, patients who would like to adjust the size or texture of their breasts can replace their implants with those which are better suited to their preference. Our Oakland breast revision surgery offers benefits such as improved physical appearance, treatment of complications from a previous breast augmentation, restoration of results that have changed over time, and increased confidence.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Revision Surgery?

Breast revision surgery is an excellent option for patients who are unhappy with the condition of their breasts following an earlier breast augmentation or breast altering procedure. Common reasons for breast revision surgery include patients who:

  • Would like to change out their implants for a different size or type
  • Have experienced complications from a previous procedure
  • Are unsatisfied with their breast procedure results
  • Have noticed changes in their results over time

Smoking, pregnancy, and breastfeeding are contraindicated for breast revision surgery. It is also important that those considering a breast revision have realistic expectations. Dr. Williams will help you understand the limitations of each procedure to help you make more informed decisions about your surgery.

What to Expect

Breast revision procedure varies according to the condition of the breasts and the patient’s goals. Breast revision may include the removal of implants, implant replacement, lifting the breasts, reducing breast size, correcting asymmetry or sculpting, or placing implants on another plane (under the muscle, versus over). Breast revision requires the use of general anesthesia and may involve significant recovery.

Recovery & Results

Recovery

As soon as your breast revision surgery is complete, your incisions will be dressed and you will be allowed to go home. A friend or family member must be present with you to drive you home and stay with you for 24 to 48 hours as you go through your initial recovery phases.

Soreness and swelling are normal following surgery, and some patients may require a temporary draining tube. Most patients can return to their daily activities within one to two weeks and may engage in more strenuous activities after three weeks. Bruising, swelling, and numbness are normal and should resolve within this time. It is important to follow all post-op instructions from Dr. Williams.

Results

Results from breast revision surgery will not be visible for at least 6 weeks following surgery due to swelling. It is not uncommon for final results to take 6 to 12 months to appear. Once the body has healed and the implants have settled, the breasts should feel soft and have an improved appearance.

How soon can you get a breast revision following your initial surgery?

It is recommended to wait at least 6 months following your initial surgery to undergo breast revision surgery.

Is it recommended to replace breast implants after a certain amount of time?

It is not necessary to replace breast implants simply because a certain number of years have passed.

What happens when a silicone breast implant ruptures?

When a silicone implant leaks, the silicone escapes the implant. Newer implants contain a silicone gel which is more viscous than that of older implants and is less likely to travel throughout the body. The FDA recommends MRI scans every three years to check for silicone implant ruptures.

What happens when a saline implant ruptures?

When a saline implant ruptures, the saline leaks out over several days and the implant slowly shrinks. Saline is not harmful to the body and poses no health threat in case of implant rupture, however, it is still important for your saline implants to be removed or replaced immediately in the event of rupture.

Why do implants sometimes migrate?

Implants may move in the years following breast augmentation due to factors such as body type, implant size, implant type, and the integrity of the pocket within which they were placed.
