Can Breastfeeding Cause the Areola to Change Shape?

You're correct that being pregnant can cause your breasts to enlarge. This can put significant stretch on the Cooper's ligaments (the major supporting elements of the breasts) and the skin. These changes of shape can include the areola. This typically can lead to areolas that are larger than pre-pregnancy. Hormonal changes can also lead to darkening of the areola which can be permanent.

Clinical Context

Areola changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding come from two factors: hormonal shifts that boost pigment production in the skin, and stretching as breast tissue and skin expand to support milk production. Darkening often fades somewhat once breastfeeding ends, though it may not return fully to its original shade. Size and shape changes to the areola can also be lasting, since stretched skin and connective tissue don't always spring back completely. How much change occurs varies a lot from person to person.
