Can Exparel be used even when having multiple procedures at once?
Exparel is really a great medication to offer patients for tummy tuck and possibly for breast augmentation too. Like any medication there are dosage limits - the more areas you're trying to treat the less drug you have available. At our practice we typically use Exparel for tummy tucks and the breast augmentation portion of mommy makeovers. We don't typically use exparel for liposuction.
Clinical Context
Whether Exparel works well across multiple procedures done together hinges on how its dose gets divided, not on whether it's allowed. There's a maximum safe amount based on body weight, so combining a tummy tuck with breast surgery, for instance, means that total has to be split across sites rather than used fully at each one. Surgeons typically prioritize the area expected to hurt most, like the abdominal wall or breast pocket, and use shorter-acting local anesthetic elsewhere, since spreading Exparel too thin can blunt its extended pain relief.
