CoolSculpting Post Procedure Swelling?

Swelling after CoolSculpting is a normal side effect. It normally resolves after several days. Some other normal temporary side effects that patients report are numbness, tingling, itching, and tenderness. Sometimes some compression on the area can provide some comfort.

In rare cases, patients can develop a firm enlargement of the treated area weeks after treatment, known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, which may require surgical correction. This is uncommon but worth knowing about.

If you ever have questions about your post procedure healing, you should always consult with the person who performed your treatment to make sure that you are healing properly.

Clinical Context

The swelling is tied to what the cooling is actually doing under the skin. Cryolipolysis chills fat cells enough to crystallize the lipid inside them, which triggers a slow-motion cell death called apoptosis. That sets off a local inflammatory response as the body sends fluid and immune cells to the area to begin clearing out the damaged fat over the following weeks. The cold itself also affects nearby sensory nerve endings, which is why numbness and tingling often show up alongside the swelling rather than as separate issues.
