Day 6 of Coolsculpt and Neurontin Not Working?
CoolSculpting works by freezing fat cells, but the cold also irritates the small sensory nerves in that area, which is what causes the burning, stinging, or aching sensation many patients feel. That nerve-related pain typically peaks around days 3-5 and gradually improves over the following one to two weeks, so day 6 discomfort is not unusual even with treatment on board.
Neurontin (gabapentin) works on nerve pain, but it often needs to be titrated to a higher dose before it's effective, and that adjustment should be made by the prescribing physician based on your health history, not on your own. Don't increase it without checking in first. Alternating ibuprofen and Tylenol can help with the inflammatory component in the meantime, and a compression garment sometimes eases the discomfort as well.
If the area is becoming firm, enlarging, or more painful rather than improving, call your treating physician promptly to rule out a rare complication called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, which needs evaluation rather than more pain medication.
Clinical Context
CoolSculpting cools the skin and fat, which can also temporarily affect nearby sensory nerves. This is why patients often feel burning, aching, or stinging in the days after treatment, sometimes worse than right after the procedure. This nerve-related discomfort usually eases within one to two weeks as the tissue recovers. It's separate from the fat-reduction process itself, which continues over several weeks to months. If pain increases instead of settling, or the area becomes firmer or larger, contact your provider so they can examine the site directly.
