Does Fracturing the Orbital Wall Have Any Physical Effects?

Yes, orbital fractures can cause real physical effects if left unrepaired. The orbit is essentially a bony socket holding a specific volume, and when the walls or floor fracture, that volume can change. Most commonly, the bone gives way and orbital volume increases, allowing the eye to sink backward into the socket, a condition called enophthalmos. Less commonly, a fracture fragment can decrease orbital volume or entrap the muscles that move the eye, causing double vision or restricted movement. Trauma can also directly injure the globe itself.

A CT scan with fine facial cuts is the key diagnostic tool here, it shows the bony architecture and soft tissue position far better than an exam alone can. If you have a history of orbital trauma and are noticing changes in eye position, vision, or eye movement, that imaging is the next step. Surgical correction is available when a true deformity exists, and coverage depends on your specific insurance plan. Find a board-certified plastic surgeon experienced in orbital reconstruction to evaluate your CT and exam findings together.

Clinical Context

Not every orbital fracture needs surgery. Surgeons look at how large the bony gap is, whether the eye has visibly shifted, and whether double vision or eye movement problems persist after swelling goes down. A fracture that looks dramatic on a CT scan but causes no visible change or vision problem may just be monitored over time. If an eye muscle is trapped in the fracture, though, timing matters — delaying repair can make the surgery harder and outcomes less predictable, so prompt evaluation is important.
