Does ThermiVa help women with poor rectal sphincter tone?

There is no data that ThermiVa would help with that issue and I would be very cautious about a provider offering that as a treatment modality for that particular issue.

ThermiVa uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat the vaginal wall tissue, which encourages collagen remodeling over several weeks and can improve laxity. But rectal sphincter tone depends on a different set of muscles and nerves entirely, and surface heating has no established way to strengthen that muscle or its nerve supply. Poor sphincter tone usually comes from muscle or nerve injury, often related to childbirth, and is better addressed with pelvic floor physical therapy or, in more significant cases, surgical repair. If this is your concern, I would raise it at consultation so we can point you toward the right specialist and treatment.

Clinical Context

Rectal sphincter tone depends mostly on the internal and external anal sphincter muscles and their nerve supply, not on the vaginal wall tissue ThermiVa targets. Radiofrequency devices work by heating tissue to prompt gradual collagen remodeling over several weeks, which can affect vaginal laxity but has no established pathway to change sphincter muscle contraction strength. Sphincter weakness typically stems from muscle or nerve injury, often during childbirth, and improving it usually requires pelvic floor therapy or, in more significant cases, surgical repair rather than surface heating.
