GAP Flap Breast Reconstruction - Does It Also Give You a Butt Lift?
SGAP flaps can be an effective way to reconstruct breasts. The challenges (in addition to the typical challenges of performing microsurgery) are typically having enough tissue for an adequate reconstruction. In my practice a second operation may be performed to perform a buttock lift on the non-operated side to achieve symmetry.
Clinical Context
The buttock has its own blood vessels running through the skin and fat, which is what allows surgeons to take tissue from that area without removing muscle. Taking tissue from one side changes its shape, but it won't automatically make both buttocks match. Because the main goal of this flap is rebuilding the breast, not reshaping the buttocks evenly, many patients need a second, separate procedure on the untouched side to restore symmetry.
