How Can I Prevent Age Spots?

There are no shortcuts here in terms of prevention. The key is sunscreen. You should apply sunscreen that is at least SPF 30, and the earlier you start the better resistance you'll have to those brown spots that can make hands look old.

Clinical Context

Age spots (solar lentigines) are flat, sun-caused pigment patches that stay the same size and color throughout the year, unlike freckles, which fade in winter. Seborrheic keratoses look similar but feel raised and waxy to the touch. If a spot has an irregular border, uneven color, or changes shape, have it checked by a doctor — those signs can indicate something other than simple sun damage.
