If I Am an Ex Smoker Can I Not Have Eyelid Surgery or a Necklift?
Facial surgery healing can be compromised by smoking. There can long term small vessel damage as well as the effect nicotine has in constricting blood vessels every time you puff that can cause the problem. Risk of anesthesia in smokers. People who smoke have a more difficult time protecting their airway and are at higher risk for pneumonia as well. If you've stopped smoking for at least three months most of these issues will likely be less of a problem.
Clinical Context
Smoking narrows blood vessels and lowers oxygen delivery to healing tissue, which can slow wound healing and raise the risk of skin loss, poor scarring, or infection after facial surgery. This effect can occur with any incision, but it is generally a greater concern in procedures that move more skin, such as a necklift, than in eyelid surgery. Quitting smoking well before your procedure, and staying smoke-free through recovery, gives your body the best chance to heal well.
