Is It Safe to Get IPL Treatments when Pregnant?

I would recommend that you wait until after your pregnancy. Hormone changes during pregnancy can cause changes in skin pigmentation and may cause darkening, so it would be advisable to hold off. While the effects of IPL during pregnancy have not been established, it is usually preferable to avoid IPL treatments just to be safe.

Clinical Context

IPL treatments use focused light to target melanin and small blood vessels, heating and breaking down pigmented cells. Pregnancy raises estrogen and progesterone, which can stimulate melanin-producing cells and darken skin — the same process behind the 'mask of pregnancy,' or melasma. Because pregnant skin is already more prone to extra pigment, it can react unpredictably to light-based treatments, sometimes darkening instead of improving. This unpredictability is why many providers recommend waiting until after pregnancy for IPL.
