Is Silicone Safe to Be Injected in the Nasal Fold?

Injecting free silicone is an off-label use of the silicone product. Most plastic surgeons would agree that these can be associated with long term problems including inflammation, hardness and pain. I would not recommend free silicone injections for my patients.

Clinical Context

The nasolabial fold moves constantly with facial expression, sitting over muscle that contracts thousands of times a day, so anything injected there is exposed to ongoing mechanical stress. Hyaluronic acid fillers used in this area are FDA-approved and can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if a problem develops. Silicone is not approved for facial injection and cannot be reversed once placed, which is a key reason most surgeons prefer removable options for this location.
