Is Zeltiq Approved by the FDA for Fat Reduction?
Yes. CoolSculpting (Zeltiq) is FDA-cleared for non-surgical fat reduction, and the cleared areas have expanded well beyond its original 2010 approval for the flanks. It's now cleared for the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, chin, bra line, and under the buttocks, among other areas. It's important to understand this is a treatment for visible fat bulges in specific areas, not a weight-loss treatment and not intended for obesity.
The technology works by cryolipolysis: controlled cooling triggers a slow death of fat cells in the treated zone, which are then cleared by your body's own lymphatic and metabolic processes over time, with visible results typically appearing over one to four months. Fat reduction per treatment session is modest, not dramatic, which is why realistic expectations matter going in.
One complication to know about is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a rare condition where the treated fat actually enlarges and becomes firm rather than shrinking, which can sometimes require surgical correction. It's uncommon but worth discussing before treatment. People with cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria should not be treated, and a hernia in or near the treatment area is something to flag as well. A board-certified plastic surgeon can help determine whether you're a good candidate and which areas are realistic to treat.
Clinical Context
Cryolipolysis works because fat cells are more sensitive to cold injury than the skin, nerves, or muscle around them, so cooling can target fat without harming surrounding tissue. Once injured, fat cells break down gradually, and the body's immune cells clear the debris over time. This is why results appear gradually rather than immediately, with most people seeing visible change over the following months as the body processes the treated fat.
