My Implants Are Too Big. Can Saline Be Withdrawn?
In our Bay Area practice we perform breast augmentations very commonly. It is not uncommon for there to be some asymmetry and swelling at one week. This usually takes about 3-6 weeks to resolve more completely. You should talk to your surgeon but don't be in too much of a rush to reduce the size at the one week post-op point. Things will likely continue to get smaller as the swelling resolves. Unfortunately, the volume can't safely be changed without risking rupture to the implant and will require replacement of the implant.
Clinical Context
Early after augmentation, breasts often look and feel larger than they will eventually be. Swelling in the tissue and tightness in the chest muscle both make the implant sit higher and fuller than its final position. Over several weeks, swelling fades and the muscle relaxes, allowing the implant to settle into place. This natural softening and drop can make a breast that felt 'too big' at one week look proportionate by six weeks, without any change in implant volume.
