Odds of Capsular Contracture if Patient Has Fibroadenoma?
In our Dublin practice we counsel patients on the incidence and ways of avoiding capsular contracture when seeking breast augmentation. To my knowledge there is no increase in capsular contracture secondary to having a fibroadenoma. Things that have been shown to decrease the incidence of capsular contracture include: Implants beneath the muscle. Using an antibiotic solution (but not betadine) during implantation Minimizing bleeding Good surgical technique I with your research and future surgery.
Clinical Context
Fibroadenomas are benign lumps that form within breast tissue itself, unlike a capsule, which is the scar tissue the body forms around a breast implant. These are unrelated processes, so a history of fibroadenoma does not add risk for capsular contracture. Factors that are linked to capsular contracture involve the implant pocket: infection, bleeding or hematoma, and prior radiation to the breast. Discussing your specific breast history with your surgeon helps clarify which factors actually apply to your case.
