Signs of Leaking Breast Implants
The first question is do you have silicone or saline implants. Generally saline implant leaks are easier to detect than silicone leaks. Signs can include: Change in shape Change in volume Associated trauma Findings on ultrasound Findings on MRI For individuals with silicone isolated lumps, redness and pain can be associated with local silicone leaking and the body's reaction to free silicone. It is important to realize that it is possible, even with strong signs of implant rupture that during surgical removal or replacement your surgeon may find that the implants are intact. Clinical Context
Rupture risk increases with implant age and with trauma such as a hard fall or forceful mammogram compression. Older liquid-silicone gels leaked more easily than today's cohesive gels, which often hold together even after the shell tears—so silicone ruptures can stay silent for years. Saline leaks are usually obvious because the body quickly absorbs the escaping saline, causing noticeable deflation within days. This is why silicone implants typically need periodic imaging to check for rupture.
