What to Do with Bad Results from Breast Implants?

"Bad results" can mean a lot of things—implant malposition, asymmetry, capsular contracture, or scarring that healed thicker than expected. At a year and a half out, most of these are no longer related to the original surgical technique; they're more about how your tissue and healing responded over time. If the implant has shifted, correction usually means rebuilding the pocket with internal sutures (a capsulorrhaphy) to hold it in the right position. If scarring is the issue, treatment depends on whether it's simply widened or truly hypertrophic/keloid, since those respond to different approaches. Cost varies widely depending on what's actually wrong and how complex the fix is, so it's hard to give a number without an exam. Bring your concern and, if you have them, photos showing the change over time to a board-certified plastic surgeon so they can pinpoint the mechanism and map out a revision plan specific to you.

Clinical Context

After breast augmentation, the tissue capsule around an implant can continue changing for months or years, so problems like shifting, asymmetry, or thickened scarring may appear well after the original surgery. These changes usually reflect how your own tissue and healing responded rather than a specific error in the procedure. Revision surgery is typically tailored to what's happening now—repositioning the implant, reinforcing the pocket, or treating the scar—based on an in-person exam and, when available, photos showing how things changed over time.
