When Does the Excrutiating Pain Subside After CoolSculpting?
Pain post-treatment is definitely normal, especially if the larger hand piece was used. Sometimes patients find relief with some compression in the treated area, taking over the counter pain medication, cool compresses, and wearing loose, comfortable clothing that does not irritate the treated area. If your pain persists, your provider can give you a prescription medication that can relieve the discomfort. The discomfort that can occur with the larger hand piece is normally due to nerve pain. The nerves can be stretched during the treatment, therefore causing some pain. There is medication that can be taken and it will gradually begin working to relieve your pain once you start taking it. Most discomfort resolves within a couple of weeks.
If your pain is worsening, spreading, or you notice new numbness after two to three weeks, contact your provider for an exam rather than waiting it out. It is also worth knowing that a rare risk of treatment is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a firm enlargement of the treated area that can develop later and may require surgical correction, so any unusual firmness or change in the treated area should also be evaluated by your provider.
Clinical Context
Cold-induced nerve irritation is a recognized side effect of CoolSculpting, more common with larger applicators. Symptoms can include aching, tingling, itching, or sharp pain, and typically improve steadily over one to two weeks as the nerves heal. If pain is worsening, spreading, or accompanied by new numbness after two to three weeks, contact your provider — this warrants an exam rather than waiting it out, and prescription options are available if over-the-counter measures aren't enough.
