Will Zeltiq Work for Buffalo Hump?

This area is challenging to treat with CoolSculpting because most of the applicators need to be able to suction the tissue into the hand pieces. This area more than likely does not have pliable tissue that will allow the applicator to effectively work. Applicator options vary, and the provider selects the appropriate one based on the area being treated, so one style may work better than others for this location. It is best to have a consultation in person to evaluate the area of concern and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Clinical Context

The real decision here is whether a dorsocervical fat pad—often called a buffalo hump—is even a good candidate for CoolSculpting, since this tissue is usually dense and fibrous rather than soft and mobile. The applicator needs to grasp and cool tissue evenly, and thicker, less pliable fat in the upper back often can't be pulled into the applicator effectively. If the fat pad is linked to a medical cause like steroid use or Cushing's syndrome, addressing that underlying issue matters more than the fat-reduction method chosen.
