Zeltiq CoolSculpting Treatment Area

The "stick of butter" is the area that was pulled into the applicator and frozen. The actual treated area is the entire red area. Multiple treatments in one area are commonly done and can be repeated in a couple of months after the initial treatment for additional fat reduction. Results typically appear over about 1 to 4 months, with some temporary numbness, bruising, or swelling being normal, and rarely the treated fat can paradoxically enlarge instead of shrinking. Give it some time and consult with your treating provider.

Clinical Context

Before treatment, a surgeon first examines the area to confirm it has a distinct, pinchable fat layer that fits within the applicator's cup, since flat or loose skin regions respond poorly to cooling. They also check for adjacent structures like nerves or hernias that could be affected by suction. Once approved, cooling causes fat cells to break down gradually. The applicator often leaves a temporary imprint, and mild numbness or swelling is normal; rarely, treated fat can paradoxically enlarge instead of shrinking.
