Zeltiq on the Scalp - Safe?

CoolSculpting is not normally indicated for treatment of the scalp nor will it be possible for treatment on the scalp due to the curvature and non pliability of the tissue at the scalp. The applicators are designed so that it can suction in the tissue at the targeted treatment area to bring it closer to the cooling panels, so it is unlikely that the scalp area can be treated this way. Applicator options vary and are selected by the provider based on the treatment area, but none are likely to effectively treat this area due to the contour constraints. You should schedule a consultation to be assessed in person to see what options there are for your area of concern.

Clinical Context

CoolSculpting works by pinching a layer of fat between two cooling panels. On the scalp, skin lies flat against the skull with little fat underneath and no loose tissue to draw into an applicator. This makes it hard for any device to seat properly or cool evenly, and uneven cooling can injure the skin without reaching a fat layer that likely isn't there. A consultation can help identify the actual cause of your concern and appropriate treatment options.
