Are Silicone Injections a Safe, Effective Permanent Wrinkle Filler?

Free silicone injections are not approved by the FDA for treatment of facial wrinkles. Scar tissue and inflammatory reaction can cause problems in the short term and changes in skin quality can cause problems in the long term. For permanent results consider autologous fat transfers. This is a much safer, natural method for permanent wrinkle correction.

Clinical Context

Silicone used for wrinkle filling is not broken down or absorbed by the body. Instead, the immune system walls it off with scar tissue, and that capsule can later thicken or form firm nodules called granulomas, sometimes years after the original injection. Fat transfer works differently: the surgeon places living fat cells, and the portion that survives develops its own blood supply and becomes integrated living tissue. Because it becomes part of the body rather than remaining a permanent foreign substance, transferred fat carries a much lower long-term risk of chronic inflammation or nodules.
