Breast Augmentation with Minimal Natural Breast Tissue?
A natural appearance for breast augmentation is something that most women strive for. It is valid to be concerned that implants might be more obvious because of minimal breast tissue. In this case, it is important to consider size. Choosing too large of an implant will typically appear unnatural and in my practice we strive to balance the patient's desires and expectation with a shape that will complement, rather than look unusual. Most breast augmentations are placed under the muscle and this can help hide the implant. However, scar size and position differs based on saline or silicone implants. This is an important consideration if choosing to go with a smaller implant as an inframammary scar may not be hidden by the size of the breast.
Clinical Context
The amount of natural tissue covering an implant affects how visible its edges and any rippling appear. Thinner tissue often makes submuscular placement more appealing, since the muscle adds an extra layer over the implant. Silicone gel implants tend to show less rippling than saline implants, which can matter more when there's little natural tissue to mask the implant. Choosing an implant width that fits your chest frame, not just a cup size goal, also helps create a natural-looking result.
