Do Breast Implants Cause Stretch Marks?
It is extremely unusual to get stretch marks from breast augmentation. It remains possible, however. Things that would raise your risk factors include an exceptionally large augmentation and a history of stretch marks. Stretch marks (striae) are actually tears within the dermis (a deeper layer of your skin). They can occur when tissue elasticity cannot keep up with the physical stretch on the skin. Clinical Context
Stretch marks, or striae, form when the skin's deeper layer (the dermis) tears because it is stretched faster than it can adapt. Elastin and collagen give skin its ability to recoil after stretching, and this ability varies by genetics, age, and prior hormonal changes such as pregnancy or weight shifts. Because breast skin is generally thinner than skin in many other areas, a sudden change in volume—such as a large implant—can sometimes outpace its elasticity, making stretch marks more likely in some patients.
