Do I Have The Tyndall Effect? 3 Weeks Post.
The Tyndall effect happens when hyaluronic acid filler is placed too superficially under thin skin, usually around the tear troughs. Light scatters through the gel and reflects back as a blue-gray tint, similar to why veins look blue even though blood itself is red. It's a physics problem, not a bruise or infection, and it doesn't fade on its own the way swelling does.
Without an exam I can't tell you whether that's what's happening in your case versus simple swelling, bruising, or filler placed too generously in that area. Bluish discoloration that's been present since injection and sits right under thin skin points toward Tyndall effect. Bruising usually shifts color over days and resolves within a couple weeks.
Either way, the fix is similar: have your injector look at it in person. If it's Tyndall effect or excess product, hyaluronidase will dissolve the filler fairly quickly. Waiting it out rarely helps once you're past the normal swelling window.
Clinical Context
Keep track of what you notice over the next few days. If the discoloration hasn't changed since your appointment and sits close to the skin surface, that supports Tyndall effect rather than bruising. Photos taken in consistent lighting can help your injector compare over time. Don't press, massage, or apply heat to the area, since this won't resolve true Tyndall effect and could worsen swelling. Book a follow-up rather than waiting past a few weeks.
