Hard to say without an in-person look, but there are a few signs that separate normal healing from something that needs attention. Drain sites are expected to be a little red, tender, and even weep some blood-tinged fluid for the first several days. What's not normal: redness that is spreading or getting darker, increasing pain instead of improving pain, pus or foul-smelling drainage, fever, or warmth that keeps building rather than settling down. Infection after liposuction is uncommon, but drain sites are a small breach in the skin and can become a point of entry for bacteria, so they deserve some respect even when everything else looks fine. If you're seeing any of the red-flag signs above, don't wait it out. Call your plastic surgeon's office and get it examined promptly, ideally the same day. If it's just mild redness and normal drainage, keep the area clean, follow your surgeon's wound care instructions, and mention it at your next follow-up.

Surgical drains are a normal part of recovery after liposuction — they remove fluid that would otherwise pool under the skin. Because the drain exits through a small opening in the skin, some redness, tenderness, and light drainage near that spot in the first days is expected. Keeping the site clean and dry and following your surgeon's dressing instructions lowers the chance of irritation while it heals, until the drain is removed at your follow-up visit.
