Have a consult this coming week with a board-certified in "surgery"... not "plastic surgery". Is this a good choice for me?
The process can be confusing and unfortunately this is exactly how some doctors want it. Board certification comes from the American Board of Medical Specialties. There are a total of 24 medical specialties they oversee. These are the gold standard certifications and include plastic surgery (this is what you're looking for - a board-certified plastic surgeon). To even make it more confusing some individuals choose to join unofficial "boards" (for example if someone says they are a board-certified "COSMETIC surgeon" you should ask some additional questions). Some of these are nothing more than a piece of paper. The process of becoming a board-certified plastic surgeon is a long one and includes graduating from medical school and an approved plastic surgery residency (a combined process of usually at least 10 years) and then a process where the American Board of Plastic Surgery examines the doctor and the procedures they perform. The entire process takes years. But ultimately that's usually what most people want - someone who has passed every scrutiny.
Clinical Context
When checking a surgeon's credentials, look up the specific board name, not just the phrase 'board-certified.' The American Board of Plastic Surgery requires an accredited residency and both written and oral exams based on the surgeon's own case outcomes. Many other 'boards' have no such standardized training or testing requirements. You can verify any surgeon's certification through the ABMS public directory before your consult.
