How Can I Reduce Areola Scars from Breast Augmentation?

There is no way to remove scars, other than replacing them with other scars. There are several treatments with scientific evidence that make small improvements in normal healing scars. Some of these options include: Scar massage, silicone sheeting, and topicals. The timing of the use of these treatments is important and using a topical, such as Mederma too early can cause wound healing problems. Remember, it won't remove the scar but it will make them less noticeable. For atypical scars, such as keloids and hypertrophic scars, there are additional treatments such as steroid injections which carry separate risks but may be of some benefit.

Clinical Context

Scars continue to remodel for many months after surgery, often looking red or raised early on before gradually flattening and fading. Because the areola incision sits right at the border of pigmented and non-pigmented skin, the natural color change helps camouflage the line. Silicone sheeting or gel is the best-studied over-the-counter option for softening scars. Hypertrophic scars stay within the original incision, while keloids extend beyond it—an important distinction because treatment differs for each.
