How Long Is It Normal to Have Swelling After Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty swelling is very common immediately after surgery. The amount and duration of swelling can vary depending on the procedure performed, the surgical technique, and individual differences in how you heal. Tip swelling is often the last to resolve, and it can persist for several months even after the majority of the swelling has subsided. Keeping your head elevated, particularly while sleeping, and following your surgeon’s postoperative splinting and other care instructions can help minimize swelling and support your recovery.

Clinical Context

Nasal tip skin is thicker and contains more sebaceous glands than skin over the bridge, so fluid clears more slowly there. The tip also has less direct blood supply than the thinner skin over the nasal bones, and it undergoes more direct manipulation during cartilage reshaping. These factors combine to make the tip the last area to fully settle, sometimes taking many months after the rest of the nose looks normal.
