How Long is Recovery from Capsular Contraction Surgery? How Long Before I Can Lift Weights?
Capsular contracture surgery involves removing the scarred capsule around the implant (capsulectomy) and usually placing a new implant. Because the pocket has already been created and the muscle already released from the original surgery, recovery tends to be shorter and less painful than the initial augmentation.
Most patients resume light activity, walking, and daily tasks within a week or two. Weight lifting is a different matter: the pectoral muscle and surrounding tissue need time to heal from the dissection, so I generally have patients avoid upper body lifting, pushing, or heavy resistance work for four to six weeks, then ease back in gradually. Jumping back into heavy lifting too soon can raise pressure at the implant pocket and increase the chance of fluid buildup or bleeding.
If a capsulectomy was extensive (full removal of the capsule, sometimes called en bloc), your surgeon may ask for a longer, more cautious timeline. Follow your surgeon's specific instructions, since technique and extent of scar removal vary case to case.

Capsular contracture happens when scar tissue tightens around a breast implant, causing firmness, distortion, or discomfort. Treatment usually involves removing the scar capsule and often replacing the implant. Healing time varies depending on how much scar tissue is removed and whether tissue support material is used. Because the muscle and pocket were already established during your first surgery, this recovery is typically gentler than your original augmentation, though your surgeon will tailor restrictions to your specific procedure.
