How Long Should I Stay out of the Sun After Laser Hair Removal?
After laser hair removal, it is usually recommended to avoid sun exposure for at least 7-10 days. This will reduce the chance of complications. Sun avoidance and sunblock use are recommended in general while doing laser hair removal treatments to minimize the risk of side effects such as burns and pigment changes because tanned skin can be more prone to complications with laser hair removal.
Clinical Context
Laser hair removal targets melanin, the pigment in hair and skin. Tanned or recently sun-exposed skin has more melanin, which absorbs more laser energy and raises the risk of burns, blistering, or lasting light or dark spots. This is why patients are asked to avoid sun exposure and tanning beds before and after treatment, and to wear sunscreen on treated areas. Skin type and how quickly your skin recovers can affect how long these precautions are needed, so follow your provider's specific guidance.
