How Long Do Muscle Spasms After a Breast Augmentation Last?
That's a great question! Muscle spasm after sub-pectoral breast augmentation can be caused by the stretch of the pect muscle when the implant is placed beneath it. However, blood and manipulation can also cause muscle spasm. The larger the implant the more likely spasms will occur. Typically, the spasm resolves after about 1-2 weeks as the muscle irritation decreases. In our Dublin practice, we have worked extensively on a regimen that reduces spasm which includes medications for the first few days as well as specific exercises for patients more prone to spasm.
Clinical Context
When an implant is placed under the pectoral muscle, the muscle is stretched into a new position, which can trigger tightening or twitching sensations as it adjusts. Blood in the area and handling of the muscle during surgery can add to this irritation. Muscle relaxants are often used in the first few days because that's when the muscle is most reactive. As swelling goes down and the muscle settles into its new position, spasms typically become less frequent and eventually stop.
