How Many Stitches Would a Facelift Require?
Most plastic surgeons don't focus on the number of sutures because the number itself is relatively meaningless. What matters more is how and where the sutures are placed, including which layers of tissue are being repaired. For example, in a facelift, plicating the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) is an important technique that helps reposition and support the underlying facial tissues, contributing to a longer-lasting and more natural-looking result. For patients, questions such as whether permanent sutures or staples are used—and whether they will need to be removed and when—tend to be much more useful than knowing the exact number of sutures. The number of sutures can also vary from patient to patient depending on the length of the incision and the individual surgical approach.
Clinical Context
The layers closed in a facelift heal differently. Deep sutures that reposition the SMAS layer are supported by the body's own scar tissue as it forms over several weeks, which helps hold the lifted position in place. Skin sutures have a simpler job—they just keep the incision edges together while they heal, usually one to two weeks, after which they're removed or dissolve. That's why suture placement and technique matter more than the total number used.
