I had Dysport injected from a vial that was unsealed and had no stopper on it. Is this usual practice?
As others have mentioned, some injectors may remove the stopper if they are near the end of the vial to make it easier to draw up the remaining product. Typically a larger needle is used to draw up the product but some injectors may use a small/short needle, which becomes dull with passing through t he rubber stopper and can be more painful to inject with afterward. I typically do not remove the stopper at our practice but if you have any concern about the sterility of the product, please don't hesitate to reach out to your injector.
Clinical Context
Dysport comes as a powder that's mixed with saline right before injection. The rubber stopper keeps the vial sealed between uses, protecting the solution from airborne bacteria each time a needle passes through it. Because the mixed product has no preservative, cleanliness at the stopper matters every time the vial is used, not just when it's freshly opened. If a stopper is missing or a vial looks compromised, it's reasonable to ask your injector how the product was handled.
