Worried About Post-op Breast Augmentation Pain
There are several techniques that can be used to minimize post-op pain after a breast augmentation. In our Dublin practice, in addition to using pain pumps where appropriate, we also place Marcaine into each pocket with the implants. We have found this to be an easy way to make the first night much less painful. Talk to your plastic surgeon about options.
Clinical Context
After breast augmentation, much of the early discomfort comes from the chest muscle being stretched to hold the implant, so it aches with arm movement and deep breaths, not just at the incision. Numbing medicines like bupivacaine work by blocking pain signals in nerves before they start, which is why surgeons often place it into the pocket during surgery or use it in a pain pump afterward. Controlling pain early on tends to make the whole recovery period more comfortable.
