Is Dysport or Restylane Safe While Trying to Have a Baby?
It is always best to be safe and avoid unnecessary treatments while pregnant or trying to conceive. The effects of injectables during pregnancy are not well known, therefore, the risk should not be taken.
Dysport works by blocking nerve signals to muscles temporarily, and Restylane is a hyaluronic acid gel that your body slowly breaks down over time. Neither has been studied in women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, since that kind of research isn't done in this group. Without safety data, we simply can't say how these products might affect a developing pregnancy. My advice is to wait until you're done trying to conceive, pregnant, and finished breastfeeding before resuming these treatments, and to bring up timing at your consultation so we can plan around it.
Clinical Context
Dysport works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to muscles; this effect fades gradually as normal nerve function returns over several months. Restylane is made from hyaluronic acid, a substance already present in skin, and it is slowly broken down by the body's natural enzymes. Neither treatment has been studied in pregnant women, since such research isn't conducted in this population. Without safety data, doctors can't say how these products might affect a developing pregnancy, which is why caution is recommended.
