Stretch Marks Before Surgery

Generally, breast augmentations does not usually cause more stretch marks. Very large breast augmentations may cause the formation of stretch marks, as it places significantly more tension and stress on the skin. Having either tight or loose skin before surgery can also influence how well the tissue accommodates the new volume. It is difficult to predict how your existing marks will look post surgery. For most patients they look better.

Clinical Context

A stretch mark forms when the dermis—the skin's structural layer—stretches faster than its collagen and elastin can adapt, causing tiny tears. The surface heals, but the deeper tissue stays thinner in that spot, which is why marks don't fully disappear. Whether skin tears depends on how much and how quickly it's stretched, along with individual skin quality. Because breast implants add volume gradually, they place comparatively gentle demand on the skin, and filling out loose or deflated skin can make existing marks appear smoother.
