What are the side effects of laser hair removal on pregnant women?
There isn't good safety data on laser hair removal during pregnancy, and that absence of data is itself the reason we advise against it. Pregnant patients aren't enrolled in device studies for obvious ethical reasons, so no laser manufacturer can tell you it's safe.
Beyond the unknowns, pregnancy raises practical concerns. Hormonal shifts increase melanin activity in the skin, which is why melasma and other pigment changes are common in pregnancy. Since laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair follicle, that same laser energy can be absorbed more readily by pigment-rich skin, raising the risk of burns or lasting discoloration. Skin also tends to be more sensitive overall during pregnancy.
Our advice: wait until after delivery, and ideally after breastfeeding, when hormones settle and skin returns to baseline.
