What's the Best Treatment for Loose Skin After a C-section?

Typically, significant amounts of excess skin can only be removed by a tummy tuck. In addition many patients after having several children have significant laxity in the abdominal muscles which can be improved by placing sutures to tighten the muscles. Skin with significant stretch marks or that loosely hangs over the c-section scar will usually not improve with liposuction techniques or laser. Be careful about marketing efforts around some of these newer technologies.

Clinical Context

Loose skin after a C-section usually needs several months to reveal its true extent, since swelling and hormonal changes mask the final result well past the six-week checkup. Most surgeons recommend waiting close to a year, and confirming that childbearing is complete, before considering a tummy tuck. That delay also allows any muscle separation from pregnancy to declare itself, since skin laxity and diastasis recti often occur together but need different repairs. Non-surgical devices may help mild cases sooner, but they won't correct true excess skin or separated muscle.
