Are Exparel Injections Used Only for Drainless Tt, and if So, Why Not Used for Regular Tt?

You can use exparel in any tummy tuck. The medication is injected below the fascia and soft tissue. Drains will not significantly reduce the efficacy. We have started offering patients Exparel for tummy tucks and other procedures. We find it offers exceptional pain relief without the downsides of narcotics or muscle relaxants.

Clinical Context

Exparel is a long-acting version of the numbing medicine bupivacaine, packaged in tiny particles that break down slowly and release the drug over a few days instead of all at once. It's injected directly into the tissue during surgery, so it works independently of any drain placed afterward. Because the drain manages fluid in a separate space, having one doesn't reduce how well Exparel controls pain after a tummy tuck.
