It is important to give yourself enough time to recover. The key issues are availability of your surgeon post-operatively should you have a problem, management of drains (usually out by two weeks but sometimes can stay longer), risk of DVT which can be significant in lengthy plane rides after major surgery and of course your ability to enjoy your trip - you'll still likely be in some pain and not back to your normal self two weeks later.

Recovery timelines vary by patient, but most surgeons want to see you in person around the two-week mark to check incisions and remove any remaining drains. Long flights add extra risk because sitting for hours increases the chance of blood clots after major abdominal surgery. If you're still swollen, sore, or restricted in movement, travel—especially overseas—can be uncomfortable and harder to manage if a problem arises far from your surgical team.
