Buying Restylane Online and Injecting Yourself?
I was recently interviewed by a major newspaper to discuss patients that have attempted this and come to me with a myriad of problems. This is a very bad idea for multiple reasons including not knowing what you're getting (you need a licence to purchase FDA approved injectables in the US), not being trained, not being able to properly anesthetize yourself during the procedure with local anesthesia. There are a long list of reasons this is a terrible idea.
Clinical Context
When a filler is injected by someone else—even an undertrained provider—there is still a person present who might notice swelling, skin discoloration, or pain and get help quickly. Self-injecting removes that safety net entirely. Products purchased outside licensed medical suppliers also cannot be verified as authentic, sterile, or properly stored, so there is no way to know what is actually in the syringe or whether it is safe to inject into your skin.
