Can I Have Botox Injections for Wrinkle Therapy with a Pacemaker Fitted?
Botox works at the neuromuscular junction locally and should cause absolutely no issues with your pacemaker. It blocks the release of a chemical called acetylcholine right where it's injected, and it doesn't travel through the bloodstream to the heart, so it has no way of interacting with your device's electrical signaling. Most patients notice softening of wrinkles within three to seven days, with full effect by about two weeks, lasting three to four months.
That said, always tell me about your pacemaker and any cardiac history at your consultation, along with the full list of medications you take. If you ever notice unusual heart symptoms after any injection, anywhere, contact your cardiologist, though this would not be expected from Botox itself.
Clinical Context
Botox acts only at the nerve endings within the muscle where it's injected, blocking release of a chemical called acetylcholine. It stays local and does not travel through the bloodstream in amounts that reach the heart. A pacemaker regulates the heart's own electrical signaling, an entirely separate system from where Botox works. This separation is why Botox is considered safe for patients with pacemakers or other cardiac implants.
