Can I take Advil days before getting lip fillers?
Taking Advil a few days before your treatment can cause more bleeding and bruising. This happens because NSAIDs like ibuprofen temporarily reduce your blood's ability to clot, so any needle puncture is more likely to bruise or swell. That effect wears off within about a day of stopping it, so even if you took a dose recently, avoiding it for the next day or two before your appointment helps. I recommend taking Tylenol for pain during this time until after your treatment, since it doesn't affect clotting the same way. If you have already taken Advil before your treatment, just make your provider aware, and mention any other medications or supplements you're on at your consultation so we can plan around them.
Clinical Context
NSAIDs like Advil can temporarily reduce your blood's ability to clot, which raises the risk of bruising and swelling after lip filler. This effect fades within about a day of stopping ibuprofen. Aspirin works similarly but its effect on platelets lasts much longer, so it should be stopped further ahead of time if you take it. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) doesn't affect clotting, making it a safer pain-relief option before your appointment. Always let your provider know about any medications you've taken recently.
