What can I do about my upper lip naturally? I'm in my early 30's and would like to prevent more from happening.

Lips thin with age mainly from loss of collagen, elastin, and the underlying fat pad, plus flattening of the vermillion border and lengthening of the philtrum. Sun exposure and smoking accelerate this by breaking down collagen faster, so sunscreen, retinoids, and not smoking are the closest things to "natural" prevention you have. They won't restore lost volume, but they slow further breakdown of skin quality.

For what's already happened, hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm, Restylane) are the most reversible, low-downtime option to restore volume and redefine the border without looking overdone, when placed conservatively by an experienced injector. Some patients also benefit from a lip flip using neuromodulator to soften the appearance of thinning by relaxing the muscle that rolls the lip inward.

Without an in-person exam it's hard to say which combination fits your anatomy best. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon or experienced injector can map out a plan tailored to your lip shape and goals.

Clinical Context

Lip thinning can come from different sources: true volume loss, a lengthening area between nose and lip, or lips that naturally curl inward with muscle tension. Your surgeon may take photos with your lips relaxed and while smiling to see how much pink shows and how your lips sit at rest. This helps determine whether volume, muscle relaxation, or both would help. Treatment is usually done in small steps, with time to reassess before adding more.
