Can I wear a bikini 1 year after tummy tuck?
Yes. By one year after a tummy tuck, your incision is well healed and fully capable of handling sun, chlorine, and swimwear fabric, so a bikini is fine from a healing standpoint. What matters most is scar placement. Abdominoplasty leaves a transverse lower abdominal scar and usually one around the belly button, and where that lower scar sits determines how well it hides under a given bikini cut. A scar placed low and long enough for a high-rise, conservative suit may still peek out from a low-rise bikini bottom. If you know you favor bikinis, tell your surgeon that before surgery so incision placement can be planned accordingly, or bring it up at a follow-up if you are still deciding on style. Scar color and thickness also continue to soften over the first one to two years, so appearance at one year is not necessarily its final result. A board-certified plastic surgeon can examine your specific scar and suit preferences to give tailored guidance.
Clinical Context
Wound healing and cosmetic scar visibility are separate concerns. Once your incision is fully closed, water and fabric don't pose an infection risk. Whether a scar shows above a swimsuit depends on where it was placed during surgery, not how much time has passed. If you plan to wear low-rise bikinis, mention this during your consultation so your surgeon can plan incision placement accordingly. Scars also continue to fade and soften for a year or more after surgery.
