Can you have Botox as a one-off or is it an ongoing procedure?

Botox is used to relax the appearance of wrinkles. Each treatment lasts approximately 3-4 months, depending on the patient. It works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that tell facial muscles to contract, so the muscle relaxes and the skin above it looks smoother. Once the medication wears off, the facial muscles begin to move again and the facial wrinkles return, as the nerve endings regenerate. That return of movement is normal and expected, not a sign anything went wrong.

Most patients have maintenance treatments 3-4 times a year. You can absolutely try it as a one-off to see how you like the results before committing to a schedule. If you notice uneven results, drooping, or symptoms beyond the treated area, let your physician know.

Clinical Context

Botox works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that tell facial muscles to contract. Without that signal, the muscle relaxes and the skin above it stays smoother, softening lines caused by repeated expressions like frowning or squinting. Over time, the nerve endings regenerate and muscle activity gradually returns, which is why the treated area slowly regains movement and lines reappear. This is a normal, expected process, not a sign the treatment failed.
