Concerns About Tummy Tuck for Stretch Marks

Abdominoplasty is an effective way to remove stretch mark scars, tighten abdominal muscles, remove excess skin typical after weight loss or pregnancy and improve your abdominal contour. These benefits come at the cost of a scar. For full abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) there is a scar around your umbilicus and from hip to hip. Typically this scar is low enough to be hidden in your panty line. Unfortunately, other treatments of treating stretch marks tend to not be very effective.

Clinical Context

Stretch marks form when the skin stretches faster than it can adapt, tearing the deeper skin layer and leaving behind thinner, less elastic tissue. This altered skin doesn't remodel well with creams or lasers, which is why those treatments give limited improvement. A tummy tuck removes the loose skin between the belly button and pubic area, taking many stretch marks out along with it rather than trying to fade them. Marks above the belly button remain, since that skin isn't removed, but they end up repositioned lower on a flatter abdomen.
